OSHA Requires Fall Protection Certification if you can fall SIX FEET or more or come in contact with a lower level. OSHA citations can range from $7k - $70k for each violation (per person).

FALL PROTECTION CERTIFICATION COURSE OVERVIEW:

Falls are the cause of the largest number of injuries and fatalities in construction. It is because of those numbers that we hear about OSHA cracking down on contractors and issuing citations to the employers and to the general contractors. The following is what needs to be done by the employer and should be required if you are the general contractor.

First the employer must provide a training program for each employee who might be exposed to a fall hazard. In the training program it shall enable each employee to recognize the hazards of falling and shall train each employee in the procedures to be followed in order to minimize these hazards.

The employees must be trained in the nature of the fall hazards in the work area.

Then they must be trained in the correct procedures for erecting, maintaining, disassembling, and inspecting the fall protection systems being used.

The use and operation of guardrail systems, personal fall arrest systems, safety nets systems, warning line systems, safety monitoring systems, controlled access zones and other protections to be used. The employees must be trained in their roles in any system that is being used on a project and while using the fall protection plan.

The employees must be trained in the correct procedures for the handling and storage of equipment and materials and the erection of overhead protection.

Finally, the Employer must maintain a Certificate of Training for each employee working with any of the fall protection systems. This certificate must have the employee name, dates of training and the signature of the person who conducted the training. The person conducting the training shall be knowledgeable and be a competent person.
