General Remodelers Council Meeting Details:

If you're looking for an opportunity to become involved in the BIA, develop new business relationships and learn the hottest trends & best practices in the industry, joining the BIA Remodelers Council is the way to go. The meetings are held monthly, typically on the first Wednesday of the month, unless it falls near a holiday. Locations vary, but are either held at the BIA office, or more frequently, Members' showrooms/businesses. Each meeting includes lunch, networking with fellow remodelers, builders and associates, and an educational presentation. The Code Administrators Association of Kentucky is happy to announce that registration for the 17th Annual Kentucky Residential Code (KRC) seminars is now open. This year’s KRC One Day training classes will be on 2018 Kentucky Residential Code and cover three topics (see description below) that have been requested by past attendees of these seminars. The special topics to be presented will cover code and construction requirements, along with pitfalls and problem areas associated with crawl space/conditioned crawl spaces, fire-resistant rated construction and deck construction.

2018 KRC – Addressing Pitfalls and Problem Areas
Crawlspaces, Fire Resistant Construction and Deck Construction
This seminar reviews and analyzes selected sections from the 2018 KRC. The class intent is to familiarize building officials, fire officials, plans examiners, inspectors, design professionals and contractors with specific areas of the code that are commonly violated. The goal is to assist code users in identifying the specific code requirements, and more importantly, educate users on the correct installation. The session will include under-floor requirements for construction, ventilation, insulation and access. Also addressed will be the fire resistive rated construction requirements in R302, when exterior walls require ratings, testing requirements and selection of appropriate assemblies. The final discussion item will be deck construction with discussion on support, bracing, connections, fasteners and weather protection.

Discuss requirements for ventilated versus non-ventilated crawlspaces
Determine insulation requirements from the energy code and impact of foam plastics
Apply requirements for use of thermal barriers and ignition barriers
Discuss requirements for fire resistive rated construction of exterior and interior walls
Identify prescribed ratings and selection criteria for the rated assembly
Determine approved materials and opening allowances and protections
Apply verification of listing criteria and field installation of the appropriate materials
Identify vertical and lateral load paths of conventional residential decks
Apply requirements of the 2015 IRC to a deck plan
Identify minimum local footing size and material
Determine appropriate beams and joist span lengths from tables
Discuss best lateral connection for deck to existing dwelling
